CHANGES, 2017
I created Changes after deciding not to reenlist in the Air Force. I appreciated much of my experience there, but I felt a strong need to break free from that system and fully commit to my art career. It was a powerful transition that became both necessary and rewarding.
Created at 3K BK Studio in Brooklyn, the piece captures a moment when I could feel myself changing before I completely understood what that change meant. I did not know exactly where I was going, but I was excited, confident, and ready to work. The unfinished lines, layered forms, and shifting character reflect that feeling of an identity still taking shape.
Changes became part of my Big Bad Wolf series and was later shown at my second Cufflink pop-up at Vinnies Styles. Inspired partly by Tupac’s criticism of how America fails its own children, the series explores the complicated experience of being born and raised Black in America.
Through Omega and Prince, I wanted to reconsider the Big Bad Wolf from the children’s story. Before judging him for blowing the houses down, I wanted to ask what happened before that moment. What shaped him? What was taken from him? What story was never told? Changes represents breaking away from the identity a system gives you and beginning the work of defining yourself.
