OVERWHELM, 2023
I created Overwhelm during a period when I was carrying a lot of thoughts, including some that were working against me. At the time, words like “overwhelmed” and “overstimulated” were everywhere. I had to recognize how easily sitting in the power of a word could turn a temporary feeling into part of my identity.
The piece shows Cufflink drowning inside the word overwhelm, surrounded and nearly absorbed by its weight. His struggle represents what happens when every thought, feeling, and responsibility begins to exist as one heavy thing. I had to remind myself that the feeling was real, but it was not who I was.
Overwhelm is about choosing mind over matter. It represents separating what exists, deciding what deserves attention, and focusing on what is most important. That decision began a painful but necessary journey that helped bring me to where I am today.
