SUGAR SHACK, 2020
Sugar Shack is my modern interpretation of the original Sugar Shack, carrying its celebration of movement, music, and Black social life into a new generation.
The piece captures a room filled with people dancing, connecting, and fully giving themselves to the music. A DJ controls the energy while contemporary fashion, natural hairstyles, African-inspired patterns, and small cultural details place the scene firmly in the present. Every figure moves differently, but together they create one shared rhythm.
Part of my Pure Gold series, Sugar Shack celebrates Black joy as something active, communal, and timeless. Styles change and music evolves, but the feeling of gathering together and letting the rhythm take over remains part of who we are.
